What is Reiki ?

There are different teachings and philosophies for Reiki as a healing practice.

Back in 2016 my then Yoga teacher took me under her wing spiritually and I became attuned to Reiki I through the Tera Mai teachings, and quickly attuned to Reiki II in 2017.

Then in late 2022 I decided to attune through a different modality of Reiki known as Reiki Jin Kei Do, as it feels more authentic, traditional and aligned to who I am.

Reiki healing is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” but can also be done remotely and “hands off” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

Reiki is a popular form of energy healing that involves using hands-on techniques to improve wellbeing. Reiki Jin Kei Do is an advanced level of Reiki that incorporates sophisticated techniques such as marma point work and point pulse utilization, which are not widely known in other forms of this healing method.

At its core, Reiki Jin Kei Do emphasizes the development of compassion and wisdom through mindfulness meditation or Vipassana. Mindfulness is central to the Reiki method and underpins all other practices within the system. While Reiki is increasingly being used in mainstream healthcare settings in various countries, it is important to recognize that Reiki was originally designed as a personal spiritual development practice. Energy-healing was only added much later in the system’s evolution.

The heart of the Reiki Jin Kei Do method is a meditation called Buddho, which is the central meditation within a practice that led to the development of modern secular Reiki. This meditation, along with other mindfulness meditation methods and basic Qi Gong training, is taught in Reiki Level 1 to enhance the effectiveness of the system as a healing method and to aid in the practitioner’s own spiritual development. As practitioners progress towards this goal, they become better equipped to bring healing to others through their growing understanding of the true nature of suffering.
